OUR WEEKLY FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT ROUTINE
If you’re new here you may not know that every Thursday we do movie night in our house. After I had my baby girl, London, we really wanted to make an effort to spend 1 on 1 time with our son Logan (our 4 year old) so we came up with our favorite weekly tradition.
Logan goes to school Monday through Thursday so since he has Fridays off, we felt like Thursday was the perfect day to let him stay up a little late. We also feel like since it’s a weeknight, it’s easier to keep the plan every week because weekends can get so busy. Ethan and I make a point not to make any plans on Thursday night’s because we’ve dedicated that time to Logan.
Logan really loves our weekly routine. He brings it up usually every Tuesday or Wednesday, “is tomorrow movie night or one more day?” It’s the sweetest thing ever to see him look forward to our family time. And it makes me feel like we’re doing something right by prioritizing it.
The night usually goes as follows, we make dinner around 5/5:30pm and once the kids finish eating, we start the movie. Usually around 6pm. This way, Logan’s not up too late (no later than 8:30 usually). London gets to see the first 30-45 minutes of the movie — not that she cares about it — one of us is usually playing with her at this time and then we all go up for bathtime.
Either Ethan or I do London’s bedtime, depending on who’s turn it is (we switch off every night) and the other one takes Logan down to make popcorn, get a sweet treat, and either a seltzer or special drink. This is my favorite time with Logan because we get to hang out just the two of us, get all our things, and head into the basement for the rest of the movie.
We snuggle up on the couch and finish the movie with the 3 of us, it’s so special. We let Logan pick the movie every week (with some slight direction so we don’t watch the same thing every week) and he really loves it.
I highly recommend implementing a time weekly that you can turn everything off and just pay attention to your babies with no other distractions. I’m excited for when London gets older and can join movie nights with us. We’ll just have to find a new thing for Logan, Mommy, Daddy time. And the same for London. As she gets older I’ll be looking for ways her and I can connect 1 on 1. I think it’s so important to do things as a family unit but also with your kids individually!
I hope this inspires you to create a new family tradition of your own! xx
